Chapter 19

Five days.

Sam hadn’t seen Sadie for five days, since Second Christmas. It was less than a week, but the days without a call or visit from her seemed to stretch on like the long ribbon of Joyful River that wended its way through miles of the valley.

He missed her. He thought about her when he was prodding the cows in for milking. Riding Comet out along the property line to check the fences. Pulling bales of hay. Eating, drinking and sleeping. He thought about pretty much her all the time, because the notion of Sadie’s love lifted his spirits like nothing else in his life.

He wondered why she hadn’t come round this week. Granted, they’d agreed to keep things between them a secret until she could have “the talk” with Mark. But he couldn’t help wondering what was taking her so long to end it with Mark Miller?

Not that he didn’t trust Sadie. She wasn’t the kind of girl to string two guys along.

“There’s got to be a good reason for it,” he said as he scraped the shovel along the dirt floor of a stable, mucking it out. The stable was so cold and damp he could see the steam puffs coming from his nostrils. This time of year, they had to come by and break the ice that formed on the top of the water troughs so the horses could drink. Not that the horses minded the cold. Mucking wasn’t his favorite job on the farm, but on a cold winter day like this, if he got into a steady rhythm of scooping and tossing, he could warm up, sometimes even get a sweat going.

With the floor of the stall clear now, he leaned his shovel against the wall of the stable and moved the wheelbarrow down to the next stall. The big wheel squealed a bit. Time for some oil. There were days when one task begot another, and then another. It was the nature of life on a farm, a twenty-four-seven lifestyle that suited Sam just fine. He liked being responsible for animals and a broad expanse of Gott’s land, and it was a blessing to live and work close to the earth.

He had turned back to get his shovel when his gaze locked upon something moving into a shaft of light from the hayloft window. She stood tall, the light shining over her like a beam from heaven. A black wool cape draped over her swept gracefully as she walked.

“Sadie?” He couldn’t believe his eyes, but it sure looked like her. For a moment he wondered if he’d dreamed her up, but the woman at the end of the stable was real, as she pivoted and turned toward him. “Sadie,” he called again. He was going to be embarrassed if it turned out to be someone else.

The beautiful figure turned his way and lifted her hand in a wave. “Sam!” The smile that illuminated her face warmed him from head to toe.

They moved toward each other, nearly running.
